You've Arrived
Now that you've received the keys and are ready to move in you'll have lots to do, cleaning, more packing, moving and unpacking. This section will inform you of some of the things you should do once you move in, for example taking meter readings and possibly changing locks.
Once you've arrived your priorities may not be to take meter readings, rather to celebrate or go out, however, doing it now may save a lot of hassle in the future. So here we have the things you should do when you first arrive and get all your things.
  • Check that all your things have arrived and have been delivered without damage and that anything isn't missing
  • Take Gas, Electric and Water (if there is one) readings as soon as you arrive
  • Clean before unpacking, its a lot easier doing it before all your things are all over the floors and worktops!
  • Unpack the essentials first, ie the kettle!
  • Also, check that anything that was in the contracts has been done accordingly, for example, radiators fixed, all the curtains and carpets are there, the garden shed is still there in one piece etc, sometimes you may only have a limited time to check these things, often 5 working days after you receive the keys.
  • Maybe say a friendly hello to your neighbours, and find out when the bins get emptied
  • Think about getting your locks changed, for example the old owner may still have some keys, or maybe their friends do, a possible security issue. A home alarm could also be a worthwhile purchase as it would both offer peace of mind along with added security to your home, and may often reduce your home insurance premium.
